  • The Real Reason You Hate Being on Camera (And What You Can Do About It)

What’s the hardest part about being on camera? If you hate it, you’re not alone. In today's video-first workplace, on-camera confidence has become an essential professional skill. I asked a Facebook group what they disliked most about video, and the answers were immediate: “I hate how I look.” “I’m afraid of being judged.” “It’s too much work to get camera-ready.” And it wasn’t just women. Appearance anxiety was the #1 reason professionals avoid turning on their cameras. And yet video is becoming one of the most important professional skills today. Worrying about how you look on camera is incredibly common, but focusing on appearance is rarely what actually solves the problem. "Thanks, Laura! I was able to break through my hangups about being seen on camera, and it's really helped me move my career to the next level." - Virginia, a client Meet Virginia: From Camera-Shy to Camera-Confident One of my clients, Virginia, was exactly like this. She worked remotely and, like many, preferred being the proverbial fly on the wall. She kept her camera off during team meetings, training sessions, even 1:1 Zoom calls, whenever she could get away with it. Virginia didn't like the way she looked on camera. She felt self-conscious and hyper-aware of every perceived flaw. But as her role evolved, so did the expectations. Her manager and team wanted to see her face. She was even being considered for a promotion that required leading virtual presentations. That promotion would pass her by if she couldn’t demonstrate leadership and communication skills on screen. So, she decided to take action. Through my on-camera confidence coaching , we worked together to shift her mindset, from one focused on appearance and insecurity to one centered on value and impact. When she stopped obsessing over how she looked and started focusing on what she  brought to the table , everything changed. Virginia not only got the promotion; she also found new confidence spilling into other areas of her life. Speaking on camera is a different skill than speaking in a room. M ost professionals were never taught how to do it. “The camera isn’t the problem. Most professionals were simply never taught how to communicate through it.” Why Do We Avoid the Camera? (It's Not Just About Looks) While appearance is a big factor, it's far from the only reason people avoid being on camera. Here are a few other common ones—do any sound familiar? Privacy and Comfort Some people just prefer the comfort of being off-camera. It can feel freeing to remain unseen, especially in a home office environment. Tech Troubles Low-quality webcams, poor lighting, bad sound, or slow internet can make video calls more frustrating than helpful. And sometimes, you don't even know what you need! Or how to use it properly. Self-Consciousness Many people feel hyper-aware of their awkward habits, a busy (and seemingly unprofessional) home environment, and comparisons to others on the call. Content Over Camera Some prefer focusing on the discussion or taking notes, finding video to be a distraction rather than a benefit. Not to mention, they'd rather be multitasking than sitting still, appearing to be engaged in the subject at hand. Social Anxiety For others, being seen by a group—even virtually—can trigger deep discomfort. This goes beyond camera jitters and may need support from a licensed therapist. How to Become More Confident and Effective On Camera If any of the reasons above resonate with you, the good news is that most of them have practical solutions. On-camera confidence isn’t about becoming someone else. It’s about removing the friction that makes video feel uncomfortable in the first place. Here are a few ways to address the most common barriers. Create a “Comfortable Visibility” Setup If privacy or comfort is your concern, start by designing a setup that feels safe and controlled. You don’t need a perfect studio, just a consistent space where you feel at ease. Position your camera so you’re framed from the chest up, tidy only the portion of the room visible behind you, and choose lighting that feels flattering rather than harsh. When your environment feels manageable, showing up on camera becomes far less intimidating. Simplify Your Tech Technical problems instantly destroy confidence. The solution isn’t expensive equipment—it’s a simple setup that works every time. The good news: a basic setup goes a long way. A simple external microphone, a small ring light or desk lamp facing you, and a stable camera position can dramatically improve how you look and sound. If you’d like a deeper walkthrough of how to look and sound more confident on video, I share several simple techniques in my guide Lights! Camera! Clients! . Just as important, test your setup before important meetings so you’re not troubleshooting while everyone waits. Always better safe than sorry! Want a practical tip you can use right away? Zoom has a test feature that allows you to check your audio and video BEFORE you start a real call. It's a great way to make adjustments in advance: https://www.zoom.us/test Shift the Focus Away From Yourself Self-consciousness often comes from watching yourself too closely. If your platform allows it, hide your self-view once you’ve confirmed you look fine. Then focus your attention where it belongs: on the person you’re speaking with. Psst... here's a secret: It's really a 1:1 conversation! Treat the camera as a single individual rather than an audience. This small mental shift can instantly make your delivery feel more natural. Give Yourself Permission to Be Human Many people avoid video because they feel they must appear polished or “professional” at all times. In reality, the moments that build trust are often the most human ones: a genuine smile, a thoughtful pause, a moment of reflection before answering a question. You don’t need perfection. You need PRESENCE. Reduce the Pressure to Perform If you're concerned about “being on display,” remind yourself that video is simply a communication tool. It allows others to see your reactions, expressions, and engagement. These are signals that help build connection, credibility, and trust. Think: You’re not performing. You’re participating . Take Small, Low-Stakes Reps Confidence on camera grows the same way confidence grows anywhere else: through practice. Start with small steps: Turn your camera on in smaller meetings Record a quick practice video for yourself Leave your camera on for the first few minutes of a call The more familiar the experience becomes, the less intimidating it feels! Know When It’s More Than Camera Nerves For some people, deep social anxiety can make being seen—virtually or in person—extremely uncomfortable. If camera avoidance triggers significant distress, working with a qualified therapist or counselor can be an important and supportive step. There’s no shame in getting help when you need it. The key thing to remember: most camera resistance isn’t about vanity. It’s about unfamiliarity, discomfort, and lack of control. Once those factors are addressed, showing up on video becomes far easier, and often far more rewarding. Want That Same Mindset Shift? With the right setup, preparation, and communication techniques, anyone can learn to show up comfortably and confidently on video. If you’ve ever struggled with showing up confidently on camera, I want to personally invite you to a free, one-on-one session: 🎥 The Shameless Hussy’s Approach to On-Camera Confidence Get your Hussy on! Or your male equivalent, because it's all the same. Showing up boldly, authentically yourself, and highly impactful on camera because you're unabashedly human. Not perfect. Not an AI simulation of a human being. YOU. (Psst... it's the way to beat the bots.) It's not always easy to do, but it's certainly doable. Take it from me, an actor with years of experience in front of the camera, behind the mic, and - surprise surprise! - years as an IT sales exec before I got all creative and bold. I can show you the essentials and help you make a big improvement right away. We'll spend 45 minutes together talking about your biggest challenge and how you can start to address it. Ready to Feel Good on Camera? Here are some of the practical ways I help clients become more confident, credible, and effective on camera: Setup • Choose budget-friendly gear • Optimize lighting and framing Delivery • Eliminate verbal crutches • Improve pacing and vocal delivery Presence • Develop natural body language • Speak conversationally to the camera Professional Visibility • Adapt stage speaking for video • Become media-ready and industry visible Because being effective on camera isn’t about being polished. It's about being present, clear, and genuinely connected to the person on the other side of the lens. The camera isn’t the problem. The problem is that most professionals were never taught how to communicate through it. Speaking to a lens requires a different kind of presence than speaking in a room. Does Any of This Sound Familiar? You might benefit from some focused help if: You avoid turning your camera on whenever possible You watch recordings of yourself and cringe Your videos get views but don’t seem to generate opportunities You feel comfortable speaking in person but awkward on camera You overthink how you look instead of focusing on your message You ramble, rush, or lose your train of thought on video If you nodded at even one of these, you’re not alone. Most professionals were never taught how to communicate effectively through a lens. That’s exactly the kind of thing we can fix quickly. If you’d like focused feedback on your setup, delivery, and on-camera presence, let's talk 1:1. It's on the house. I'm Laura Doman, a voice & TV/film actor and video communications coach. As an actor, I create memorable characters that tell my client's stories well, from the friendly CEO to your sassy best gal pal dispensing real-world advice. As a coach, I help you become more comfortable and charismatic on camera in videos, presentations, and online appearances. VOICE OVER •  ON CAMERA •  CONSULTATION & COACHING

  • Why Smart Professionals Sound Weird on Camera

Insights from a Voiceover Conference for On Camera Excellence Cross-pollination. It's not just for horticulturists, bees, and images of springtime. It works for humans pretty well, too. As in borrowing a technique from one world and discovering it solves a problem in another. That's what happened this past weekend - well, four days - when I spent four days at VO Atlanta, the largest voiceover conference in the world, with 1000 other voice actors and industry professionals. Turns out, spending time around people who professionally talk to themselves in padded rooms can teach you a lot about how business leaders should communicate on camera. Voice actors train relentlessly to sound natural—the exact skill many business leaders lose the moment the camera turns on. They train to sound natural . Most professionals, though, have a tendency to do a fair imitation of a human PowerPoint . The “Human PowerPoint” Problem "To be an interesting human being - you must be authentic and for you to be authentic you must embrace who you really are, warts and all." — Samford Meisner You’ve probably seen it. A smart person with great expertise sits down to record a video or lead a webinar. The camera turns on... and suddenly something changes. Their shoulders tighten. Their voice flattens. Their delivery becomes oddly formal. Instead of communicating, they start presenting . The result is what I call Corporate Webinar Voice . Technically correct. Emotionally forgettable. And that’s why so many videos, virtual presentations, and sales calls get polite attention but fail to build trust—or clients. The issue usually isn’t the content. It’s the delivery . The Voice Actor Trick Business Leaders Need One of the simplest ideas I heard repeatedly at the conference is also one of the most powerful. Talk to one person. Not an audience. Not “everyone watching.” One human being. Voice actors rarely imagine a crowd when they record. They picture a single listener and respond to them. That small mental shift instantly changes the way communication sounds. Instead of formal and performative, it becomes conversational. With training and guidance, you can learn to do the same thing. A useful framework is to ask yourself four questions: What perspective are you speaking from—coach, colleague, instructor, advisor? What’s the message you want to deliver? Who is the one person you’re talking to? What did they say or do that prompted your response? Now you’re not presenting information. You’re responding to someone. And that’s when audiences start to feel connection. Why Over-Practicing Backfires Another insight from the acting world might surprise you. Over-rehearsal often makes communication worse. When people try to memorize every word, they become hyper-aware of themselves instead of focusing on the listener. The delivery becomes polished, but lifeless. Authenticity isn’t perfect delivery. It’s human delivery . As acting teacher Sanford Meisner famously put it, authenticity comes from embracing who you really are, imperfections and all. Ironically, those small imperfections are exactly what audiences trust most. They distinguish you as REAL. Human. Relatable. And not some AI simulation of the real thing. Your Physical Energy Changes Your Voice Here’s another interesting lesson from the performance world. Your body position and movement directly affect vocal energy . Actors often think about gesture placement as a way to control intensity. After all, our body language imitates our thoughts, gives away our feelings, and reflects the intensity of what we're saying. Here's a simple guideline to think about: Hands below the waist = low-key delivery Hands at the waist = calm and conversational Hands above the waist = enthusiastic and engaged Hands well above the shoulders = full rally-mode energy When professionals lock their hands rigidly together or stay frozen behind a desk, their voice often flattens too. And when vocal energy drops, even brilliant ideas can sound dull. Our physicality truly drives our expression. The Real Skill Behind Camera Confidence Most people think they need to improve things like: lighting equipment editing production quality Those things can help. They ARE important, but on their own, they don't create trust. What actually builds trust through a lens is presence . Presence means communicating the way humans naturally do: conversationally responsively with energy and variation When that happens, audiences stop feeling like they’re watching a presentation. They feel like someone is speaking with them . They feel involved and therefore, more invested in what you're saying. T hat’s when communication starts to convert. Visibility Alone Doesn’t Create Clients We’re pretty much aware we're all living in an era where content is EVERYWHERE. LinkedIn videos. Webinars. Virtual presentations. Sales calls on Zoom. Lions, tigers, and bears - oh my! Make it stop. Please. It's overwhelming. It's true that visibility for its own sake has never been easier, but being seen isn’t the same as being trusted . T rust is what turns visibility into clients. In a world saturated with polished content and AI-generated messaging, the thing audiences respond to most is simple: human communication. Want to Learn How to Apply This? I’m incorporating the best lessons from VO Atlanta in a live masterclass this week: Boring Keeps You BROKE! How Presence Turns Visibility Into Clients April 1, 2026 3:30 PM EST / 12:30 PM PST In this session, I’ll show you how to replace stiff, scripted delivery with communication that feels natural and credible on camera. You’ll learn how to: Quiet the self-judgment loop that makes people tense on video Shift from presenting to conversing so audiences feel connection Use pauses, vocal variety, and energy shifts to hold attention These are practical techniques leaders can apply immediately in: videos Zoom calls webinars virtual presentations Because when communication feels human, trust builds faster — and opportunities follow. No cost. Easy registration. If you’ve ever watched yourself on video and thought, “why do I sound like that?” this session will explain exactly why — and how to fix it. And you won't even have to lock yourself in a padded room to get there! Want to learn more? Let's talk! I'm Laura Doman, a voice & TV/film actor and video communications coach. • 7 Simple Delivery Shifts That Make You Easier to Watch

Half the Secret to Great Vocal Delivery is Avoiding These Common Mistakes It's been said many times, but it's really true: From time to time, we all get in our own way. We're terribly self-critical. We want to get it "right." And in our pursuit of being good on camera, we end up recording the same d*mn video over and over again... ...which totally defeats the purpose. If you've ever been there - and I have! - you know that it only progressively get worse and worse. Yup, by the 27th time, it's pretty stale and you're just about ready to throw the camera halfway across the room. It's time to stop. Not because take #2 was the best (and it probably was), but because all you've really achieved was to psych yourself out. News flash: You're coming across as tired. Stressed. Forced in videos 3-27. Quit trying so hard! And I'm saying this to myself, too, because I fall in the same trap from time to time. The truth is: polish, platforms, and tools aren’t the deciding factor anymore. Authentic, realistic, human energy is. You don't have to be perfect. But you CAN be confident, natural, and credible — without performing. How about some sure-fire ways to improve your delivery? Bonus: they work just as well in person as they do on camera! Clarity beats performance. Every time. “By take #27, you’re not improving. You’re unraveling.” 1. Slow the thinking, not just the talking Most people try to “slow down” by speaking more slowly. Sorry, that rarely fixes the problem. If your mind is racing ahead of your words, your delivery will still feel rushed, even at a slower speech rate. Here's what you should do. Let's call it "the shift": Complete one thought before starting the next Let ideas finish instead of stacking This creates natural pacing without forcing an unnatural cadence. It's a more relaxed way of speaking, too, that is far more engaging to the viewer. 2. Stop tightening your voice to sound professional Many professionals unconsciously narrow their voice on camera. They hold tension to sound controlled and polished. Unfortunately, tension reads as strain, not credibility. And it's rough on your voice, especially when you overdo it. Try this instead. The shift: Allow your voice to stay fuller and more relaxed Speak as if you’re explaining something to one intelligent person This increases warmth, clarity, and authority simultaneously. It'll draw your viewers in, too. 3. Let pauses do the real work Pauses feel dangerous when you’re recording. They sound MUCH longer to us than they really are, and we feel a real need to fill up the emptiness. You may even worry that those pauses sound awkward and that your viewers will lose attention and wander off to watch a cat video or something. Not so! To the viewer, pauses feel intentional. They signal: confidence clarity leadership In other words, a serious, experienced speaker formulating thoughts in the moment. It feel real and very human, both to the speaker ahd to those watching. Simultaneouly, the pause lets you collect your thoughts and structure your next words: Stop filling space automatically Let silence land after key ideas Bonus: they give you a mini-break, which cues your body to relax a bit and moderate your pace. 4. Separate thinking from speaking Multi-tasking has its limits! I try to keep multi-tasking to simple things, like folding laundry or cooking dinner while listening a podcast. (Don't I sound so domestic?!) Talking about one point whie your mind races ahead to prepare the next one creates: filler words ("um" or "you know") rushed phrasing flat delivery You end up looking unprepared and flustered - or just plain boring. The shift in thinking here is to... Pause to think Then speak This simple separation makes delivery sound conversational and grounded... and so much more interesting. 5. Stop performing confidence You're not fooling anybody. Confidence is not something you layer on. That just looks like a performance, like someone trying too hard... and it's not convincing. Please don't do the following; these come across as bravado, not true confidence: over-project exaggerate energy monitor yourself constantly Confidence appears when you remove interference. Stop trying so hard to be taken seriously and just: Focus on being understood Let clarity replace effort Calm authority emerges naturally... and people lean in. 6. Speak to one person, not an audience The camera triggers broadcasting behavior. If you're reading a script (please don't do that! We can tell.), your voice changes to "presentation" or broadcast mode. You audience feels like you're preaching to them. Formal, distanced, less relatable. The camera is truly more of a conversation you're having with each person watching you. It feel personal, so do this instead: Picture one specific listener Speak as if you’re in conversation This dramatically increases connection and watch time, not to mention trust and the feeling that you actually care about the person watching you. 7. Trust clarity more than personality You don’t need to be bigger, funnier, or more animated. You just need to be clear. And keep it simple, down to the essentials. What do we, your listener or viewer, need to know? Fewer words, said plainly, land better and are easier to remember than long-winded details Trust the idea and let it do the work Clarity carries more weight than embellishment. And in much less time, too, which helps keep short attention spans on your content. The Benefits to YOU When you stop trying so hard and follow these seven basic principles, you're going to realize a few things: Recording becomes easier You need fewer takes You'll be happier — and less harsh on yourself Analytics bear this out: you'll see a stronger viewer response Why? It's not because you became someone else. It's because you removed all sorts of friction - you relaxed a bit. Slowed down. Focused on speaking clearly and plainly, and TO the audience than AT them. Going on camera? A final thought Delivery isn’t a personality trait. It ’s a skill. And in 2026, it’s the skill that quietly determines whether people stay, trust, and take the next step. Most importantly, it can be learned. I offer masterclasses throughout the year on this very subject. If you want a heads-up as to the next one, comment below or drop me an email . I also speak on this subject at other people's events, like this one . Group workshops? Most definitely. Just let me know what you need . The Prosperity Mindset Summit What are the mindset patterns that quietly shape how money flows into (or away from) your life? Every talk delivers clear, actionable ideas you can apply immediately. No hype. No pressure. Just real value. An On Demand Audio Experience March 1st - 20th, 2026 Want to learn more? Let's talk! I'm Laura Doman, a voice & TV/film actor and video communications coach. I work with brands, agencies, educators, healthcare organizations, and content creators who need a voice that feels human, confident, and trustworthy — not generic or overproduced. Business Sense Meets Performance Skill Before stepping behind the mic full-time, I spent years as a tech industry sales executive , telling business stories, educating clients, and addressing real-world concerns. From tech startups and Fortune 500 companies to local businesses and educators, I understand what you’re building — and how strong storytelling supports it. My voice doesn’t just sound g ood. A Voice With Range — and Point of View I bring a positive, get-it-done attitude to every project, along with plenty of fun when the script calls for it. Need character work for eLearning, animation, or branded content? I’ve got you there, too. I’m a working film and TV actress and an active member of a local improv company , which means I know how to listen, respond, and bring characters to life naturally. Some voices I’m known for: The approachable, hands-on CEO Your best gal pal with sage advice (and a little sass) Mom… who’s (sigh) right again I’ve played all of those roles — on screen, in the booth, and in real life (just ask my kids). Why Clients Choose Me Because I get both sides of the mic. Having lived in both the business and creative worlds , I understand goals, timelines, messaging, and tone — and how to deliver exactly what a project needs without overcomplicating the process. My broadcast-quality, acoustically treated home studio has been built specifically for professional voice over.
